Fuel-Loaded Freight Train Derails in Tambov, Triggers Massive Fire

(MENAFN) A cargo train transporting fuel derailed on Wednesday near the Kochetovka-2 rail station in Russia’s Tambov region, setting off a powerful explosion and a large fire that engulfed multiple tank cars, according to reports.

Regional authorities said the incident involved a total of 16 tanker wagons carrying flammable materials. Tambov Governor Yevgeny Pervyshov shared updated details in a public statement, saying:
"According to updated information at the moment, as a result of the incident at the Kochetovka station in Michurinsk, 11 tank cars with gasoline and 5 with gas caught fire. Two firefighting trains and 25 units of equipment are working at the scene,"

No official cause for the derailment was provided. Pervyshov said inspection teams will assess the condition of the railway infrastructure after the flames are fully extinguished, with repair work to follow once damage is confirmed.

Earlier statements from emergency services indicated that the fire was brought under control across an area measuring about 1,000 square meters.

Despite the incident, rail operations in the city of Michurinsk have since resumed, according to remarks from the regional deputy governor.
