Chile’s Highway Truck Blast Leaves Six Dead

(MENAFN) A devastating truck explosion on a Santiago highway has claimed six lives, Chilean health authorities confirmed Saturday, as the death toll continues to climb following one of the capital's most destructive road disasters in recent memory.

The two most recent fatalities succumbed to severe burns in hospital despite intensive medical intervention, authorities stated. Fifteen people remain hospitalized with serious injuries, fourteen of whom are fighting for their lives in critical condition.

The catastrophic blast erupted Thursday after a suspected gas leak from the truck ignited, triggering a massive fireball that engulfed surrounding vehicles on the highway and spread rapidly to a nearby parking lot. The towering wall of flames and thick plumes of black smoke were visible across multiple districts of the Chilean capital.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the explosion.
