9th Street reopens; drivers reminded of temporary conditions and new traffic pattern
9th Street officially reopened to traffic Thursday, marking a major milestone for the Jayhawk Watershed Project.
As drivers return to the corridor, the City wants to highlight a few temporary conditions and changes to the roadway:
- Manholes: Some manholes in the westbound lanes currently protrude above the surrounding pavement. This condition is temporary while remaining project work continues. Crews will return to adjust the manhole collars to their final position in the roadway.
- Lane configuration: Temporary pavement markings now transition 9th Street from two lanes of traffic in each direction to one lane in each direction at Tennessee Street.
- Parking: Temporary parking along Mississippi Street is no longer available. No-parking signs are posted in the area.
Drivers are encouraged to use caution, follow posted signs and allow a little extra attention while becoming familiar with the updated traffic pattern.
Next Week: A shorter construction week
Work on 9th Street will be limited the week of Sept. 7. With Labor Day on Monday and the KU-Mizzou Border Showdown on Friday, Sept. 11, crews will have a three-day construction window.
Week of September 14: Work continues
The week of September 14, crews return and focus their attention to pavement restoration on 9th Street, taking advantage of the following three weeks between KU home football games.
During this work, 9th Street will remain open, but motorists should expect lane shifts and temporary delays. North-south traffic on streets including Tennessee and Kentucky may experience short delays and medium-term closures of less than an hour at certain times.
Crestline Drive to close between Harvard Road and Westdale road for sinkhole repair
Beginning Tuesday, September 8, City crews will close Crestline Drive between Harvard Road and Westdale Road to address a sinkhole near the road.
This work will only occur during school hours to minimize the impacts to student drop-off and pick-up for West Middle School.
The City anticipates this closure to end on Thursday, September 10, pending weather or other delays.
Traffic Safety Moment | Raised Crosswalks
Raised crosswalks are designed to make pedestrian crossings more visible while encouraging drivers to slow down as they approach.
Unlike a standard painted crosswalk, a raised crosswalk brings the crossing closer to sidewalk level and creates a gentle vertical change in the roadway. This helps draw attention to the crossing and can reduce vehicle speeds where people are walking.
When approaching a raised crosswalk, slow down, watch for pedestrians and be prepared to stop. Pedestrians should still make sure drivers see them before entering the roadway.
