Temporary traffic holds scheduled for rock mitigation on US 40/ Berthoud Pass

Grand County — The Colorado Department of Transportation advises motorists to prepare for weekdays, Monday to Thursday, traffic holds on the west side of US 40 over Berthoud Pass starting Monday, Sept. 21. Crews will perform essential rock mitigation work south of Winter Park between Mile Points 236 and 240 to ensure safety ahead of the winter season.

Motorists should anticipate total travel delays of up to 20 minutes as queuing traffic clears following each hold. For safety reasons, drivers are strongly advised to remain inside their vehicles and stay on US 40 rather than seeking alternate secondary routes.

Traffic Impacts

Beginning Monday, Sept. 21, motorists will encounter 20-minute traffic holds on US 40/ Berthoud Pass south of Winter Park between Mile Points 236 and 240. Traffic impacts will include:

Monday, Sept. 21 to Thursday, Sept. 24 and Monday, Sept. 28 to Thursday, Oct. 1
7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
Intermittent 20-minute traffic holds in both directions

Freeze-thaw cycles in Colorado cause moisture to expand in the rock's cracks, which dramatically increases the risk of unpredictable, hazardous rockslides onto the roadway. By intentionally bringing down these high-risk boulders in a controlled environment, CDOT prevents dangerous rockfalls, protects travelers, and stabilizes the slope before winter conditions set in.
