NMRTC Bethesda Celebrates RS and LS Rating Birthdays

by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Alec Kramer

BETHESDA, Md. — Sailors, Soldiers, officers, and civilian teammates assigned to Naval Medical Readiness and Training Command Bethesda and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, gathered to celebrate the birthdays of the Navy’s Retail Services Specialist (RS) and Logistics Specialist (LS) ratings, Oct. 1, 2026.

The observance recognized the supply community’s contributions to command readiness and its role in sustaining daily operations across NMRTC Bethesda. RSs, LSs, officers, and civilian personnel mustered for the event in recognition of the professionalism, accountability, and customer service that underpin the supply mission.

Capt. Darla Dietrich, commanding officer, NMRTC Bethesda, congratulated the supply team and recognized the direct connection between logistics support and warfighter readiness.

“Day in and day out, their coordinated efforts ensure that military treatment facilities, operational medical platforms, and forward-deployed units possess the material resources and support infrastructure required to deliver the high-quality healthcare needed for warfighter readiness,” said Dietrich.

Dietrich also reflected on the heritage of the RS and LS ratings and the value of recognizing the Sailors who continue that legacy.

“Naval history and heritage are important for us to remember,” said Dietrich. “Celebrating on Oct. 1 allows us to recognize the team for their service, show respect for the evolution of the logistics ratings, and recognize the capabilities they bring in support of our mission.”

“The logistics team is critical to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and NMRTC Bethesda’s warfighter readiness,” Dietrich added. “I am proud to have them on our team.”

As logistics requirements continue to evolve, Dietrich said the Sailors serving in the LS and RS ratings bring a range of skills that are essential to mission success.

“Our logistics team members are strategic thinkers, problem solvers, and customer-relations representatives,” said Dietrich.

Cmdr. Lisa Brown, Director for Administration, emphasized that the work of Logistics Specialists and Retail Services Specialists is essential to enabling Walter Reed’s medical mission.

“Here at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, our Logistics Specialists and Retail Services Specialists play a critical role in enabling the medical mission,” said Brown. “While their contributions may not always be visible at the bedside, they are essential to ensuring our hospital has the material, equipment, repair parts, and supplies required to operate effectively.”

“Our LSs and RSs provide the logistical backbone supporting procurement, receiving, inventory management, storage, distribution, and accountability,” Brown said. “Their work ensures the right resources are available at the right place and at the right time, allowing our clinical and operational teams to remain focused on caring for our patients and maintaining readiness.”

For Retail Services Specialist 1st Class Torey Robinson, leading and developing junior Sailors is among the most rewarding parts of serving in the rating. As the leading petty officer for supply chain management, Robinson said the opportunity to mentor others has been especially meaningful.

“My favorite part about being an RS is being a leader and watching those under me develop as leaders,” said Robinson. “I chose RS because I wanted to be a businessman, and I feel that RS is as close as you can get to that.”

NMRTC Bethesda’s mission is to maximize warfighter performance through optimized medical readiness tailored to operational requirements; enhance the readiness of the medical force to sustain expeditionary medical capability; and train and develop the Navy Medicine Force.
